Picking up Guitar
Bit of backstory first, skip to the third paragraph if you don't care.

Yeah, so since I was from an Asian family, I was given the mandatory several years of instruction in the piano. I don't play anymore, but it helped me when I was learning to play the guitar earlier.

Unfortunately, due to a hellish sophomore year, I basically gave it up and did nothing but study and play computer games. But now I have a lighter courseload and want to pick it up again, and hopefully become somewhat experienced at it.

Right now, I'm at the level where I can do scales, basic and barre chords, and elementary melodies. I have an introductory guitar textbook, but not much beyond that. What do you recommend I focus on after this, and are there any resources that you can recommend to me?

Thanks.

RE: Picking up Guitar
Depends what your goals are.

I haven't studied or practiced guitar in years and years (played since I was 10 years old). So I can't really recommend any specific resources. But it depends on your goals. Do you want to learn a certain style of music? Do you want to be able to join a band? Do you just want to learn your favorite songs? Do you want to be able to improvise?

If you're looking to expand on drills and techniques, you could work on tremolo, rhythms, picado, etc.
Here's a good site to start with if you want more on things like the tremolo and picado:

I love improv, by the way. Awesome stuff. Once my teacher taught me the necessary scales and transposing, it's easy to build upon.

If you want some pieces to work with, here's a good link my teacher routinely uses for us:

The Spanish side of guitar can be some sexy stuff for the seƱoritas haha. But it depends on your tastes.

I'd like to know what direction you're headed currently with this too.

As for direction, I don't intend to join a band or do anything serious, I just wanted to be able to have fun playing my favorite songs and have something to do at home besides play videogames.

I would say just find songs you like that are challenging, yet not totally out of reach. Then sit and practice them until you can play them along with the recording cleanly and easily. Rinse and repeat. You can get pretty damn good at guitar just doing that over and over for a few years.

Getting into music theory, scales, chord voicings, etc., is interesting and all, but I'd say unless you wanted to join a band or learn how to improvise, then it's not really worth it.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking.

Also, ugh, developing the calluses again will be a pain.

They come back faster... no idea why that is, but whenever I go back after not playing for a long time, my fingers only hurt for a couple days.
