You hear the new Opeth album yet?

What do you think?

Can't say I care for it. Although I hated it the first couple times I listened to it... now I think it's OK, but definitely don't think it's nearly as good as any of their other albums.

I've only listened to the song The Devil's Orchard:

And I really liked it. It's incredible how you can travel to the past listening to that song. And even though I'm not a big fan of Deep Purple and I'm not from the 70's the creativity that Mikael shows is incredible! As always. That guy is super creative and progessive. I'm gonna have to listen to the whole CD.

I'm gonna see Opeth live on 09-19 in Worcester, M.A. First time in my life, I'm super excited.

I kind of wish Akerfeldt had released this as a solo album. As it's clear it's kind of a pet project of his. The album is good, but it just doesn't feel like Opeth. Which is kind of annoying. I don't ever see myself going back to it over and over again like I have with Blackwater Park, Damnation and Still Life over the years.

Enjoy the show. I've seen them 3-4 times (once in Worcester). They do a great show. Great venue as well. Hopefully they play some heavy stuff.

Also, you wouldn't know it, but Mikael has a great sense of humor. A lot of the stuff he says between songs is hilarious.

I like opeth old album as well. Btw leo, do you ever listen to electronic musics?

I have two group of friends...the disco(electronic) and the rock friends. Seem like these two are antithesis of each other lol.

Rock insist it takes no skill to create electronic. While it's true to a degree, it certainly takes creativity to make catchy musics. Some of the rock shit honestly felt like noises to me. Never got into stuff like morbid angel etc.

you know, my issue with electronic music is not that it takes no skill - composing is a skill, after all, and a ton of hip hop producers have amazing skill. I just think, in fact, most (but not all) electronic music is pretty forgettable.

The only rock musics that are truly memorable to me are more of the old school bands, deep purple, journey etc. The new rock bands music are just as forgetable as electronic musics. Hell, because rock is so dead, a lot of the band cant even make forgetable "catchy" songs, instead they just "shred". Shredding is possibly the dumbest shit i've ever heard in any kind of musics. "here, let me just play so many notes to show off my leet skill at guitar even if the song is incoherent".

With that being said, i have more fun at most raves than most rock concert. Been trying to get my best friend to go to a rave just once to experience it and he's dead set that he wont have fun there...despite havent even been to it once. I've been to 30+ rock concerts with him.

Yeah I am thinking of a very different category of rock music. I would call, for instance, arcade fire a memorable recent band, but they aren't in that hard rock heavy metal category. Also memorable and recent: the national, modest mouse, radiohead.

Favorite band recently is Three Days Grace. Speaking of which, there's an uproar festival in october, and i'm going to check it out. Should be hella fun...although probably zero chicks heh.

RE: Leo: Opeth Heritage
I just recently started to appreciate electronic music. Believe it or not... and I still don't really get this... it took me going to a number of live shows to start to appreciate it. I love the stuff now.

I was born and raised a rock/metal kid. Played guitar for 16+ years.

And call me crazy, but I see a lot of similarities between electronic (particularly trance) and metal music. Like Brian said, most people I know are either rock people or electronic people, and they tend to think I'm crazy when I say it. But if you pay attention and listen, the same shit is going on (build ups, break downs, double times, etc.). The instrumentation is just different.

Well, as I said before I've only listened to one song of that CD but even though it doesn't SOUND like Opeth it is Opeth at the same time because it's super creative, original and progressive. Just like what happened with the Damnation album, it doesn't sound like Opeth but those ballads are incredible. I remember it took me some time to get used to Damnation and learn to like it.

I'm gonna enjoy the concert for sure, thanks!
