I don't really know much about fashion, but I would keep in mind the obvious: that clothing that fits well and flatters your body looks better than poorly fitting clothes that make you look bad. Or clothes that make you look weird.

I was shopping for clothes today, and I came across a number of T-shirts, some with vertical stripes, some without, that just made me look horrible. I'm a taller guy, and I wanted a look that emphasized my upper torso and shoulder spread a bit while I worked on that in the gym. Instead, these clothes made my lower torso look bloated and my upper torso look tiny. I asked my friends for opinions and got a similar response.

I junked them in a hurry.

Yes Yes. Definitely ask your friends how you look. I can't tell you how many times I thought I looked good when I didn't and people were nice enough to say nothing, but were pretty warm when I changed the look ahaha.

My sister's pretty brutally honest. It helps to have people like that critique how you look because sometimes you're way over your head.

Fashion advice and writing seems to attract a lot of homosexuals and otherwise strange folk. If you're a normal guy just trying to dress a little sharper (not make statement) be wary of what you read. Style advice is also generally consumerist; it's geared to spending a lot more money and time than is reasonable.

The basics of what to wear as a normal dude are so simple it doesn't require much thought or reading. I mean, the stuff on the mannequin at Macys or Banana Republic is probably fine. If you understand that cargo shorts are ridiculous you probably know enough.

The key thing to understand, which most don't, is perfect fit. You need to have a tailor, and you need to spend a significant fraction of your clothing budget on alterations. You might even consider getting a cheapo sewing machine and learning how to use it. If you bought all your clothing at Target, made tasteful selections, and got it perfectly tailored, you would look better than the guy who walked into Hugo Boss and spent thousands but skipped the alterations. I even take in the sides and hem cheap T-shirts.

This advice is the most that resonates with me:
Quote:1. Go For The Classics

Fortunately, men can wear something that’s several years old and not look dated, because
most of what’s out there for men is classically styled. Fill most of your wardrobe with timeless staples instead of trendy ones, and you’ll get the most out of your clothing.

Here are some staples that have been adopted into the eternal wardrobe of men:

White button down shirts
The trench coat
Black suit
Sports Jacket/Blazer
Overcoat
Zip-up hoodie (great for layering and lounging)
Oxfords (classic dress shoes)
Polo
Ties
White T-shirt
Sunglasses
Jeans (a lighter casual pair and a darker dressier pair)
Watch
Black belt
You can create so many combinations of outfits by stocking up on these staples and mixing and matching them together. For example you can wear a colorful polo underneath your blazer, with dark jeans and your oxfords. You can also wear a white dress shirt underneath a zip-up hoodie with light casual jeans and some stylish sneakers. Learn to mix and match and create multiple looks.

It actually is pretty simple.
