I heard the only reason Jack Nicholson got any was because he was just another Charlie Sheen basically.

'How I Met Your Mother' does seem to be very aware of Pick-up techniques; in the episode 'Unfinished' the group discuss Barney's moves...

- Ignore the target until they show interest
- Use back handed compliments to lower their guard
- Brag about yourself in the form of a complaint
- Isolate and give them your attention...and compliment and touch
- Force them to act by making out they could lose you if they don't.

Sound familiar to a certain fuzzy hatted magician's moves!

It's a great show, and illustrates two types of dating situations. Ted wants a wife, and Barney only wants lays. Ted is probably the more likeable guy, even if he does insist on correcting or trying to educate his friends or dates ('fun fact number one'). He's a nice guy who doubts himself to much and tries too hard...hence the fun facts.

Barney Stinson is incredibly confident, which is one reason he gets laid a lot. He's convinced he's awesome, and rejections or logistics are easily dealt with. However, Barney's moves only work on bimbos, which is all he wants anyway. It's quite funny that even though Barney is a wealthy, smartly dressed executive and quite handsome, he spends countless hours and effort on his elaborate 'plays'.

To the show's credit, they do show Barney get rejected hard for his moves, and show why he's a sex addict.

But using a TV show or a film as instruction isn't really wise in the long run. It's like using Bruce Lee movies for self defense moves...the hero wins because of the script, not the system.

There is this one episode about Barney's past:
He is shown to be a very sensitive guy who 'respects women' (=AFC) then his gf cheats on him with an older, rich guy and he transforms himself into the ladies' man we know today. This is like the #1 story why guys get into Pickup.

I do not like Ted. Sure, he is good looking and a pleasent conversationalist, and his "opener" is classic. But Ted is a hypocrite imo.

I also reckon the number one reason why guys get into PU is not revenge (e.g. Barney) but a lack of experience. Ironic...

I like Nip/Tuck. One of the main characters is a huge sleaze-bag and a womanizer. Not sure if fictional characters will actually help you improve though.

@ TheBoss, I was thinking about this, and realistically, tv and movies are useful for examples of good body language and tonality, and in some cases for fashion ideas (nip/tuck would have been very good at the time for that, thanks Ryan Murphy). They are pretty much unhelpful for learning any other pickup related skill.

Speaking of fashion, one thing that can be really helpful is finding celebrities with similar body types, hair, eye, and skin colors to you, and checking out what they wear.

But be very, very careful. A lot of them dress badly.

The thing is, it's easy, because most celebrities dress either 1) well or 2) in a ridiculous fashion. Just don't imitate the ridiculous ones.

I still remember when I thought buying a scrolling LED belt buckle was the best idea in the world for picking up girls. Oi.
