Formal = goes to the bottom of your ass. The shorter you get from there = less formal and more casual.

That's about all I can tell you.

No such thing as correct length.

Better off thinking about what fits you best. Something that fits but is the wrong cut is better than the right cut that doesn't fit.

I agree on the sister thing. Also, you can't assume that any woman knows about fashion! My sister for one doesn't know shiiit.

Usually depending on what kind of guy they are dating at the moment

gusdsnail is right on about finding out what works for you and your build. There really isn't a right answer with length because it depends on the style of the coat and the individual as long as it looks like it fits. A cheap jacket from Goodwill that fits can look better than something from Banana Republic if it doesn't fit properly.

P.S I'd say I have better taste when it comes to dressing then half the girls I know... It has improved drastically over the few past years
