Dan savage recently pointed out that there are only 10,000 cases of throat cancer per year in the US, so this really is not a gigantic worry.

HPV and oral cancer link

In 2005, a research study at the College of Malmö in Sweden suggested that performing unprotected oral sex on a person infected with HPV might increase the risk of oral cancer. The study found that 36 percent of the cancer patients had HPV compared to only 1 percent of the healthy control group.[21]

Another recent study suggests a correlation between oral sex and head and neck cancer. It is believed that this is due to the transmission of human papillomavirus (HPV), a virus that has been implicated in the majority of cervical cancers and which has been detected in throat cancer tissue in numerous studies. The New England Journal of Medicine study concluded that people who had one to five oral-sex partners in their lifetime had approximately a doubled risk of throat cancer compared with those who never engaged in this activity and those with more than five oral-sex partners had a 250% increased risk.[22][23]

This is all meaningless if you don't know the odds of getting throat cancer. It's most likely miniscule even if you have girls sucking your peen all day.

Or is this for the giving partner only? Wink

What Jon said. This is what drives me crazy about a lot of STD info and journalism about it. When you hear that it can double the risk of throat cancer, it sounds horrifying. But then you realize that only 1 out of 30,000 people gets throat cancer and that 95% of people survive it with minor surgery, and you realize it's not such a big deal. You're probably more likely to die from getting struck by lightning... and that may not be an exaggeration.

All that said, I think I will get the HPV vaccine if my insurance will pay for it. Less because I am personally worried about getting throat cancer, and more because the more people who get it, the safer everybody is.

Well, if you are highly promiscuous, as I ASSUME a lot of us are because we dedicate so much time to talk about women and sex, OF COURSE you have a higher chance of getting sick. And if you don't practice safe sex you are putting yourself in a risky situation.
I have a close friend of mine that got herpes just after having sex ONCE with a woman that was a carrier. He was such an idiot that the woman said to him she got herpes, he didn't care and had sex with her without a condom. IDK if he gave oral sex to her or not, but he got neck cancer some time after that, I don't know if it is related or not about having sex with that woman. Yes, he's alive, he works, he went to college, etc, etc. But he was close to lose his voice because the cancer was near to his vocal cords. And for God's sake! Who wants to get cancer? He has had several surgeries to remove the cancer from his neck because the cancer kept coming back after every surgery, he needs to go for check ups to the hospital regularly, who wants to live under that kind of pressure? Getting radiation, etc, etc.

Using your analogy about getting struck by lightning what would happen if you are that kind of guy that is always chasing storms? Your probabilities of getting struck by lightning increase exponentially. But I'm sure these guys try to protect themselves from the lightning some how.

Mi primary care Dr. told me that no insurane covers the HPV vaccine in men above age 26 and that it would cost $200 per injection and you would need 3. That's how it is here in M.A.
