How to expand your comfort zone? - Flow - 04-08-2011 02:57 PM

So I've realized lately a lot of success is determined by how much people have expanded their comfort zones.

Whether by cultural pressure or conscious determination.

I've also realized I've never really been forced to expand my comfort zone in any way...

So I'm curious... what things in life have expanded your comfort zone?

Going to shows?
Getting a certain job?
Walking around a city alone?

Doesn't matter how big or small...

I'd like to eventually do some kind of missions to expand my comfort zone, as I feel almost like I'm trapped in a tiny bubble.

Traveling alone
Skydiving
Going to night clubs alone
Public speaking

Do things outside of your comfort zone Tongue

But don't do them because somebody told you that this is the "key to success". Do them because they are fun or because you need to do them to be successful in your endeavor.
Singing in a bus won't make you better with people or financially literate for example.

Every time you are thinking of doing something or trying something new and the annoying voice in your head starts making up excuses just do it anyway.
This way your life will be a lot more fun too

I think this is excellent advice. No other way to expand the comfort zone than to step outside of it every once in a while.

I agree with Marks choices. Ive done them all apart from skydiving which I intend to do. Bunjee jumps a good thrill though!

I think a big one is setting up a challenge thats exciting and signing up for it in advance knowing that by the time you have to go to that class or go on that night out your in some way prepared. The adrenaline rush is huge when you have committed to something you cant easily get out of. Put some money on it too (like a public speaking course) so you cant easily talk yourself out of it.

This is huge. Put yourself in situations where, in the words of Don Draper, "there's only one direction, forward." Do this by publicly announcing your goals to your friends, and have friends participate with you. Studies show that people who compete with their friends are much more likely to achieve their goals than those working on it alone.

"I went in determined to stay. There was no alternative in my mind.
I was like the ancient Greeks assaulting the walls of Troy.
I burned all my ships when I landed.
There was no way home except through victory".
